RECENTERING TRANS* EXPERIENCES IN REPRODUCTIVE CARE

As movements expand around issues of reproductive access, transgender, non-binary, two-spirit and intersex people are all too often left out of the conversation. This workshop is founded in the core beliefs asserted by Black women at the frontlines of the Reproductive Justice movement: that we all have a human right to maintain personal bodily (and gender) autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities (SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective). Participants will be asked to expand their personal politic in preparation to include, support, advocate, and be in solidarity with trans* individuals. In exchange, they will acquire a toolkit for evolving their own model of care that includes cultural humility, knowledge of gender-affirming surgeries and hormone treatments, familiarity with fertility options, and practical interventions on the dehumanization of trans* people receiving reproductive, perinatal, and obstetric care. We will also partake in a discussion on the politics of parenthood, revolutionary parenting models, and some motivations and concerns for raising gender-creative, non-binary, trans-identified, or gender-unassigned little ones.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participation in this workshop will empower attendees to...

  • Unpack their social/cultural understanding of gender within and outside of reproductive care and birth work

  • Name social determinants of access to reproductive careIdentify sites of inaccess to reproductive care for cis and trans individuals

  • Reframe gender-inclusivity as trauma-informed care and liberatory praxis

  • Evaluate the benefit of using trans-inclusive language and critique its limitations

  • Develop new best practice protocols for supporting trans individuals in their path to parenthood

  • Collaborate with trans clients on an advocacy strategy that will reinforce their gender autonomy wherever they might seek care

  • Envision an end to gender-based violence in obstetric care

COURSE FORMAT

This is a 6 hour intensive, solutions-oriented workshop that informs and prepares doulas, midwives, childbirth educators and other birth workers and reproductive care providers to support and advocate for trans and non-binary individuals. In six hours we will dig deep to uproot systemic transphobia and its entanglement with racism, sexism, sizeism, ableism, and classism. This format includes video content, personal narratives, a 30 minute break for lunch, Q&A, and extensive case study analysis for group practice at coordinating care.
